Agriculture Tourism
Wells Gray Country contains a number of vibrant agricultural communities.
The fertile land found in the North Thompson valley has been cultivated as far back as the late 1800’s. Many of the farms are still cared for by decedents of these pioneers. The small townships of Vavenby and Birch Island are home to a diverse range of farms, many of which offer unique farm stay opportunities. The Aveley Heritage Sheep Ranch in Vavenby was established in 1906 and is the oldest and largest 4th generation sheep ranch in in Canada. The sheep ranch offers visitors the opportunity to take part in a wide range of farming activities including lambing which takes place in the spring. There are other unique farms within the Wells Gray Area providing trail rides, the chance to see a buffalo or just soak in the Western style atmosphere.
Farmers’ Market
Another popular attraction in Wells Gray Country is the weekly Farmers’ Market where many of the local producers sell their home grown and handmade products. You will find everything from fresh organic produce, preserves, flowers and plants, to crafts and art work. The market runs from May through October, offering visitors the chance to truly taste the spirit of Wells Gray Country.
